The Opportunity

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (“BBBSA”) is seeking a contractor for a 6-month long contract to support our Communications Department. The position will work in remote capacity. The PR & Communications Writer will play an active role supporting the CEO and senior leadership team of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) during an exciting time of growth and transformation for the organization. Under the direction of the Chief Communications Officer (CCO), the PR & Communications Writer will provide support and lead development of various internal and external communications. The successful contract candidate will be a seasoned writer experienced in managing communications, executive and stakeholder content writing. The role will assist BBBSA accomplish its strategic communications goals to agencies, key stakeholders and the broader public and community constituents.

The PR & Communications Writer will work closely with the CCO to develop speeches, scripts, remarks, quotes, internal communications, talking points, short and long-form pieces (op-eds) for the CEO and company executives. To develop all materials requested, the writer will work with applicable departments, executive leaders and subject matter experts to ensure projects are completed, measured and delivered on time.

Contract length is determinant upon varying factors and is subject to change.

Contractor Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, English, Journalism or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Six to eight (6-8) years of experience in writing, formulating copy and editing.
  • Minimum five (5) years of post-college experience as a writer in a journalistic, corporate, agency or nonprofit setting. Has experience of collaborating and writing with senior executives, marketing, and corporate communications to develop leadership content and communications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work quickly and accurately under deadlines.
  • Experience and success in project management and creativity.
  • Effective writer with experience drafting communications and correspondence to engage key audiences and stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with executives and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure.

The PR & Communications Writer essential roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the CEO, senior leaders and subject matter experts to write high-quality thought leadership materials, strategic communications including speeches, talking points, speaking events, employee meetings, video scripts, op-eds, media by-lines, etc.
  • Translate narratives and messaging into powerful, impactful language for a wide range of audiences, including speeches, op-eds, web content, and collateral material.
  • Prepare polished final drafts of high-level strategic communications for internal and external audiences, including researching, consulting with relevant colleagues, and writing original works.
  • Actively edit and provide feedback on executive communications drafted by others. Review material regularly for consistency and editorial quality.
  • Research, report and develop communications related to organizational initiatives, updates and successes for the CEO and senior leadership team as needed.
  • Stay current on social issues, industry news, and relevant topics to ensure the CEO's messaging reflects current societal sentiments and events.
  • Collaborate closely with peers, including Marketing, Resource Development, and Human Resources colleagues.
  • Ability to write powerfully, effectively, creatively, and clearly across a range of media—often while working under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to capture the distinctive voice of the CEO in speeches, remarks, op-eds, presentations, and other written works.

        • Champions internal and external culture of the organization focusing on being a JEDI-focused youth empowerment and equity organization.
        • Provides consistent follow-up regarding assigned projects and after meetings.
