The Opportunity

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (“BBBSA”) is hiring a Director of Internal Communications. The Director of Internal Communications will collaborate with the Chief Communications Officer to develop and manage strategic communications channels and messaging to key internal stakeholders including national staff and the network of over 230 Big Brother Big Sisters (“BBBS”) agencies. The Director of Internal Communications is directly responsible for all planning, development, and implementation of BBBSA’s internal communications strategies, communications channels, and activities. This role manages the voice from the national office and understands the needs of the BBBS network, ensuring communications and information are disseminated in a timely manner.

This position will work in a remote capacity.

Candidate Profile

The Director of Internal Communications will be a critical player in defining the messages delivered by BBBSA CEO and senior leadership through internal communications including videos, social media, internal and stakeholder keynotes, and written and face-to-face communications. The Director will be responsible for full end-to-end management of speaker preparation, rehearsals, briefing documents and supporting materials.

In addition to working directly with the executive team, the Director will create toolkits, messaging, and other communication materials for use in presentations and/or learning and development curriculum related to Communications and PR projects as well as strategic initiatives.

The Director of Internal Communications is required to have Bachelor’s degree, with a strong preference in Marketing, Communications or Journalism. The Director will also be required to demonstrate a minimum of 7-10 years of relevant experience, preferably in aMarketing & Communications department.

The Director of Internal Communications essential roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Communications

  • Manages the preparation of internal communications for BBBSA, including content from the CEO.
  • Directs the creation of content such as stories, blog articles, best practices, and other news items to for BBBSA’s internal audiences.
  • Manage BBBS Bigs and Littles of the Year initiative, the organization’s match recognition program, including submission process, selection, communications and supporting promotion.
  • Collaborate with cross-department leaders on communications needs supporting projects and initiatives including: BBBSA Annual Report; National Conference, Race, Relationships, and Resources webinars.
  • Serve as communications lead for BBBSA National Conference managing the activities including script writing, program book development, messaging, promotional copy for digital/social, and network communications.
  • Develop thoughtful messaging and content for leadership to speak at internal engagements and advise on communication tactics and strategies.
  • Collaborates across teams to develop and drive storytelling opportunities. Leads story gathering and management system, to catalog and share stories in efficient ways.
  • Organizes and develops strategies and tactics for managing internal communications across the Big Brothers Big Sisters network.
  • Ensures and oversees message and brand consistency in all digital communications including newsletters, agency materials, web and social content.
  • Supports local BBBS agencies across the country by responding to communications-related questions and inquiries from agency leaders via phone, email and Workplace by Facebook.
  • Collaborates internally with others to draft communications and develop platforms to inform and facilitate internal stakeholder communications.
  • Serves as manager in overseeing any relationships between BBBSA and agencies or contracted support regarding development of content for distribution or campaigns, ensuring consistent use of brand message and content.
  • Leads development, review, and editing of materials for internal communications including briefing materials, scripting/messaging for internal presentations, agency engagements, social media, and events.
  • Drives the use of current and relevant communications templates and materials and oversees the improvement of relevant processes to maintain efficiencies and operational excellence.

Technical Assistance

  • Engages in communications strategy discussions to ensure alignment.
  • Defines and clarifies roles and responsibilities with others to prevent gaps in delivery.
  • Provides strategic thinking and direction to senior leaders in the planning and execution of internal communications.
  • Develops and implements editorial strategy and calendar to support alignment to goals of the organizations and desired outcomes.
  • Guides creative ways to get the right message, to the right person, at the right time and through the right channel.
